Falls: My Comprehensive Approach as a Former MPR Doctor for Proactive Prevention and a Secure Daily Life.
Fall prevention represents one of the major, if not THE most important, challenges in the strategy for maintaining autonomy at home for seniors and people with disabilities. As a former doctor and head of department in Geriatric Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, I have had the privilege of dedicating a significant part of my career to an in-depth study of the complex mechanisms that lead to falls and to the development of multidimensional strategies to anticipate and prevent them.
My approach is not limited to obvious and simple physical modifications. It integrates an exhaustive multifactorial clinical analysis: I examine the impact of polypharmacy that can lead to side effects (orthostatic hypotension, dizziness, drowsiness), nutritional status influencing muscle strength, sarcopenia, specific balance disorders related to neurological pathologies (stroke, Parkinson’s), the quality of vision or hearing affecting environmental perception, and of course, the adequacy between the person’s residual functional capacities and their living environment.
I work to identify intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors specific to each individual, creating a very precise risk profile. For this, I can suggest additional assessments (ophthalmological, ENT, cardiological) or recommend personalized and adapted exercise programs, often in close collaboration with physiotherapists. But my fundamental added value is to translate this exhaustive clinical analysis into a plan of concrete and coordinated actions at home: in collaboration with occupational therapists for structural modifications, with caregivers for adapting daily gestures, and with families for informed vigilance. My expertise as a former doctor allows me to « prescribe » a comprehensive prevention plan, integrating material solutions, behavioral adaptations, regular follow-up, and caregiver education, thereby significantly reducing fall risks and ensuring the long-term safety of the person’s daily life.
