Family Caregivers, Essential Pillars: My Strategic Support as a Former Doctor to Strengthen, Enlighten, and Preserve Them.
Family caregivers constitute the frontline of support, the often anonymous and indispensable heroes of home care. Having closely interacted with thousands of families as a former doctor and head of department in Geriatric Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, I have an intimate knowledge of the extent of their commitment, the complexity of the challenges they face, and the physical and emotional impact this responsibility can have on them.
As an autonomy coordinator, an absolutely essential and humanistic part of my mission is to support, train, and equip these caregivers. Drawing on my in-depth clinical experience, I can concretely enlighten them about their loved one’s pathology, help them decipher sometimes challenging behaviors, and provide them with tools and techniques to manage daily life more serenely and effectively. I am no longer the treating physician, but I offer them an expert and empathetic « reading » of the situation, helping them to decode subtle signs, anticipate developments, and react adaptively and proactively.
I can advise them on safe handling techniques to prevent injuries (both for the person being cared for and the caregiver), on managing moments of agitation or confusion, on available legal and financial resources, or on respite strategies to preserve their own health. I help them navigate the complex labyrinth of the healthcare system, coordinate various interventions, and find the right balance between the care provided and maintaining their own physical and psychological well-being. My expertise as a former doctor is an invaluable asset for caregivers, offering them a reliable compass in the complexity of care, helping them become informed, resilient actors, and preserving their own quality of life.
