The prescription process for an electric wheelchair retains a professional qualification requirement, despite the simplification of financial coverage. The prescription remains the prerogative of a specialist doctor in physical medicine and rehabilitation (MPR). The purpose of this measure is to ensure that the equipment is perfectly adapted to the user’s clinical, physical, and environmental needs. The wheelchair is indeed a complex medical device, and an inappropriate choice can lead to health complications.
The process takes place in several stages: a first appointment with a general practitioner who, after an initial evaluation, refers the patient to an MPR doctor. The specialist, often in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team (occupational therapist, physical therapist), establishes the prescription after a thorough evaluation. The patient can then go to an authorized supplier to obtain the wheelchair. This process, while guaranteeing the relevance of the equipment, could pose logistical challenges, particularly due to the uneven distribution of MPR doctors across the country, which could potentially lengthen waiting times for a consultation.
