December 1, 2025, marks the entry into force of a major reform of the French healthcare system concerning the mobility of people with disabilities. This new policy provides for the full reimbursement of wheelchairs, whether manual or electric, as well as custom-made models, with no out-of-pocket cost for the user. The law aims to guarantee universal access to adequate mobility equipment, classifying it as an essential good and no longer as a product subject to the financial fluctuations of households.

Until this date, the coverage of wheelchairs was governed by a nomenclature that set reimbursement amounts that were often far below the real market prices, leaving an often considerable « remainder to be paid. » This cost difference constituted a proven financial barrier for many families. The reform aims to remove this barrier and allow any eligible person to obtain the equipment prescribed by a healthcare professional, regardless of their income. It is part of a public policy aimed at reducing inequalities in access to essential health equipment and improving citizens’ autonomy.
